The Joe Frex Base CONVEX features a slightly outward-curved surface for tamping coffee powder and is crafted from solid stainless steel on a CNC lathe. Similar to the American Curve, the difference between the center and the outer edge is 1.5mm.

Why Convex?

Usually, the surface of the espresso tamped in the portafilter does not play a significant role: whether flat or convex, there is enough space between the coffee surface and the shower screen for the water to distribute evenly over the coffee and permeate the powder evenly.

However, if shallow baskets are used or significantly more than 7g (1-cup basket) or 14g (2-cup basket) are used, there may be insufficient space between the coffee powder and the shower screen for optimal brew water distribution. For this purpose, a Convex tamper base can be used to create a depression in the center for optimal water distribution.
